In 2008 as the Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Paul Bettencourt was sued for voter suppression. Also in 2008 Paul was reelected but within a month of winning the election Paul resigned as the Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector and opened Bettencourt Tax Advisors because he could make more money. Every year over 700,000 property tax protests are filed in Texas, it is a profitable business.
Leo Vasquez was appointed to replace Paul, he settled the lawsuit.
Paul Bettencourt’s political future was saved. He continued preaching on the radio about property taxes, calling himself “ The Taxman “.
In 2014, with Dan's support and the free time he was given on Dan’s radio station Paul was elected to replace Dan as a Texas State Senator.
Now Paul was able to reduce property taxs without having to file a protest.
Do you still have to pay Paul to protest your property taxes?
If Paul was a Democrat Republicans would scream about his conflict of interest.
In 2015 Dan named Paul Chairman of the Texas Senate Select Committee on Property Tax Reform and Relief, the wolf now guarding the hen house.
The Committe toured around Texas, giving Paul media coverage.
In 18 years have your property taxes decreased?
All Paul has done is to write legislation creating complex formulas.
If Paul was a Democrat Republicans would scream about his conflict of interest.
But instead he continues to be reelected, like a Democrat.
We need to elect Republicans who serve us, not themselves.
Democrats in other states have used this same game of increasing property taxes until voters eventually vote for a state income tax.
And unless we stop this game Texas will have a state income tax.
And your property taxes will continue to increase.
